Problems Context

Problems Context

  • Users lose interest due to overcomplicated health apps.

  • Data input can be time-consuming.

  • Missing some education tips or guidedance, beginner don't know where to start

Solution

Solution

  • Simifily the data input process

  • Fun and interesting way to keep track of their statics

  • Show tips and guide on how to stay on track of keeping a health habit.

How might we design an health app that avoids overcomplicated features while making it fun and engaging to check their progress?

How might we design an health app that avoids overcomplicated features while making it fun and engaging to check their progress?

When I started working on this health app, I talked to people around me who use health apps or smartwatches to track their daily habits. I discovered that many of them wanted to improve their health behaviors but didn’t know where to start. Some had downloaded health apps, but found them ineffective. My hypothesis is that current health apps often include too many overcomplicated features that users don’t actually need.

Quantitative Research & qualitative research

With all these questions in mind, I started a survey to better understand people’s health habits and goals, as well as how many of them had used a health app before and how effective those apps were for them. After the pre-screening process, I conducted more in-depth one-on-one interviews with those who had used some health apps before. The goal is to understand their situations, what their current struggles were, and what difficulties they faced that prevented them from maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

  • Some apps required a more manual data input process, which was time-consuming and hard to keep up with.

  • Some apps had a lot of overcomplicated features that users might not need.

  • Lack of clear guidance, and users weren’t sure where to get started.

At the same time, I did some research on major health apps on the market and compared their features to see what was lacking and what potential opportunities or improvements could be made from there.

Personas

Personas

I developed two personas after my research, both are college students and working professionals who are trying to balance a busy lifestyle while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They both used health apps before and struggled to keep up with them due to a lack of guidance, and they also want a simpler data input and an app that has all the basic tracking features.

I started with the Crazy 8s exercise to generate ideas for the app. My goal was to create a fun and engaging way for users to check their progress. The interaction should feel satisfying and rewarding to use.

I came up with different ideas for switching between tabs and trackers, one with the main navigation located at the bottom right corner.

Another earlier concepts was inspired by the dial wheel of a vintage phone. I experimented with this idea because I wanted the main interactions to occur at the bottom part of the screen, making it more user-friendly and ergonomic. Users could swipe left or right to move between different tabs.

I decided to proceed with one of my iterations, keeping the phone dial wheel interaction as the fun part of the app. I tested it with my friends, and they thought it was very satisfying to dial left and right.

Originally, I was thinking of using the Glassmorphism style for the UI to represent a sense of transparency and elegance. However, after some early feedback, I realized that the text could be a bit hard to read and that it also created some accessibility issues. So, I decided to tone it down by using white as the main color, gray tones as the secondary, and gradient colors to label different tabs, making them easier to recognize.

The navigation is intuitive and straightforward, most of them were able to navigate to where they wanted. However, here are some things they suggested for improvement:

  • Some minor accessibility issues with the grey text, it can be hard to read.

  • They wish the tracker had some more advanced controls.

  • The edit button needs to be resized; it can be hard to tap.

  • They hope to have the option to add custom workout labels.

There’s so much I learned from this project, especially improving my advanced prototyping skills. It was great to go through the entire design cycle, from the research stage to prototyping to user testing, and see what I could improve from there. I’ll take what I learned and apply it to my future projects.
